Letter Home

Captain Milton B. Stutzman (Touch n Go Stutz)
Today's post is in honor of Veteran's Day. I offer you a simple letter, written January 6, 1944, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, from one young man among many, to his mother.

Dear Mom:
Boy I'm really an old salt by now. Had some fairly rough weather a few days and quite a few got sick. Somehow I've missed getting sick. Lucky me! Rather enjoyed it.
There is only one boy with me that I graduated with. Sure was good to run into him back at Richmond. Alphabetically he's right next to me so we will probably stay together. Sure hope so as he's a good kid.
They tell us we can say where we think we're going so I say I think will be in England in a very few days. Sure will be good to get something solid under my feet and start eating 3 meals a day again. We eat breakfast at 0730 and supper at 1700. At first we about famished but was all right soon as we became adjusted to it. Be sure to send me John and Helen's address. I may be ....to look them up without it. I'll try.
         Love & Kisses, Milton

Dad was right on his guess as to where they were going. He was stationed in Duxford, England as part of the 78th Fighter group and flew P51d Mustangs, escorting bombers. He told me once about the first time he knew he had a guardian angle. He was out on a mission and had an enemy fighter chasing him down. He went low in a ravine which surprised him with a hard turn. He knew he couldn't make that turn, or shouldn't have, but he did, and it wasn't by his own doing. God was watching out for him then.

Thanks for your service Dad, and for all who have fought for freedom. Love & Kisses, your baby Betty.
